The second loss for Sri Lanka and a 10% match fee deduction come after South Africa’s humiliating setback

Sri Lanka

After losing against South Africa by a huge margin of 102 runs and surrendering 428 runs, Sri Lanka’s World Cup 2023 campaign appeared to be in trouble. Following the match, the players were assessed a 10% match expenses punishment by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for failing to complete their overs on time.

At Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, runs were scored with ease because of the small boundaries and level playing field. The Asian squad, however, was two overs short of the required number of target overs at that moment due to the time allowances taken into consideration.

The decision was made by ICC match referee Javagal Srinath, and the Sri Lankan team did not object since captain Dasun Shanaka accepted the punishment, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

Each player will be fined 5% of the match costs for every over bowled after the time restriction, and in this case, Sri Lanka was two short, in accordance with ICC Article 2.22, which deals with minimum over-rate infractions.

Richard Illingworth, Shahid Saikat, Michael Gough, and Alex Wharf, the on-field umpires, were the second and third to make the accusation.

Three Proteas batters—Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram—notched their respective tonnes throughout the match, which the Lankans were unable to equal. They responded with only 326, which is usually a respectable amount, but not that day.

Following this, Sri Lanka will play Pakistan on October 10 in Hyderabad in an effort to reverse their fortunes.
