Before landing the knockout blow, 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa forced Caruana out of his comfort zone, making him the third-youngest player to qualify for the Candidates Tournament behind Fischer and Carlsen.

In order to challenge the favorite Magnus Carlsen in the FIDE World Cup final in Baku, Azerbaijan, World No. 3 Fabiano Caruana was forced out of his comfort zone, forced into shorter time-control games, and defeated by R. Praggnanandhaa.

Praggnanandhaa, who turned 18 during the World Cup and beat second seed Hikaru Nakamura on the way, is now the third-youngest player to earn a spot in the Candidates Tournament, behind Bobby Fischer and Magnus Carlsen. Additionally, he is the first Indian since the introduction of the knockout format in 2005 to get to the World Cup final.

It may be noted that the 24-player league-cum-knockout system was used for Viswanathan Anand’s victories in 2000 and 2002.

In the first 10-minute rapid game, Praggnanandhaa and Caruana settled their disagreement after four draws over the course of three days. By the 21st move, Praggnanandhaa, who was playing white, had an extra pawn, but Caruana had an advantage.

When Praggnanandhaa obtained a second pawn and quickly pushed his king to the queen’s side, adding to Caruana’s concerns, the story took a surprising turn.

In Critical Trouble

At this point, Caruana understood he was in serious difficulty and required some moves from his youthful opponent of questionable strength to make up lost ground. However, Praggnanandhaa persevered in his pursuit of the win and was just one move away from achieving checkmate when Caruana quit on the 63rd move.

Caruana came back to fight back with white pieces, but Praggnanandhaa was the one who actively played to put his helpless opponent under strain. Caruana did manage to escape difficulty, but he never had any real chances to win. Finally, Praggnanandhaa remained silent, and the ensuing 82-move draw allowed him to surpass Caruana.

In retrospect, Praggnanandhaa should consider himself exceedingly fortunate to have won the first 25-minute rapid game with black pieces in 71 moves, while Caruana was left to regret his decision to push a kingside pawn on the 54th move, which saw his chances of victory vanish in an instant. Caruana managed his time better than Praggnanandhaa in this game, and he carried that confidence into the next.

Praggnanandhaa had to move cautiously in the second as well, and Caruana was ready to seize any openings.

Praggnanandhaa put in a better performance this time, but Caruana never felt pressured.
