Raksha Bandhan 2023: Why is Raksha Bandhan celebrated for two days this year? Learn More Here

Raksha Bandhan Rakhi 2023 2

The important occasion of Raksha Bandhan is approaching. Raksha Bandhan 2023 is historically observed on the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha during the Shravan month, according to the Hindu calendar.

This year, however, there is some debate about whether the celebration should be held on the 30th or 31st of August. Raksha Bandhan 2023 includes sisters putting protection threads (Rakhis) around their brothers’ wrists, and this confusion has sisters debating which day to celebrate.

This confusion originates from the fact that the 30th of August matches with the presence of Bhadra, as well as the full moon (Purnima) day in the Shravan month. As a result, the Rakhi festivities have been extended to include both the 30th and 31st of August.

Notably, according to religious beliefs, engaging in beneficial actions during the Bhadra month is often deemed unlucky.

As a result of the arrival of Bhadra, many are unsure whether to celebrate Raksha Bandhan 2023 on August 30th or August 31st. According to Hindu tradition, it is best to avoid performing any auspicious acts during the Bhadra period. Raksha Bandhan is therefore historically celebrated at the Shravan Purnima day, avoiding the Bhadra period, and ideally in the afternoon.

The shadow of the Bhadra month will cast itself throughout the day on Raksha Bandhan 2023. According to the Panchang, the Shravan Shukla Purnima begins at 10:59 AM on August 30 and lasts till 07:05 AM on the following day, August 31. The Bhadra period will begin on August 30, coinciding with the commencement of the full moon day, and will remain until 9:01 PM on the same day.

Because of the presence of Bhadra during this time period, it is not recommended to tie Rakhi on August 30. The best time to tie Rakhi is after the Bhadra month has ended. Some astrological experts believe that tying Rakhi at night is inauspicious.

Sawan Purnima is slated for August 30 this year, beginning at 10:59 a.m. and ending at 07:05 a.m. on August 31. After that, the first day of the Bhadrapada month will begin. Notably, while the full moon date begins on August 30, it also marks the beginning of the Bhadra period, which will last till 9:01 PM.

As a result, Rakhi can be tied after the Bhadra period ends on August 30. It is worth mentioning, however, that some astrologers advise against tying Rakhi during nighttime.
